BIO

Katie-Ann Houghton completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Sydney College of the Arts in 2011, and after graduating became a full-time assistant for Sydney based glass artist Ben Edols.

While at college and working with Edols, Katie-Ann exhibited her work in several galleries around Sydney and NSW. She was also selected to be a part of the National Student Glass Art prize, where her work was acquired into the gallery’s collection. Throughout her time at SCA, she worked as a teaching assistant for a number glass art courses, both university and private, ranging from beginner’s level to advanced classes.

At the end of 2013, Katie-Ann applied and was accepted into the competitive Associate Training Program at JamFactory in AdelaideDuring the two-year program in the Glass Studio at JamFactory, Katie-Ann focused on developing distinct design elements and refined her craftsmanship. She gained invaluable skills from working with expert practitioners and the other Associates.

The Generate exhibitioin at the end of Katie-Ann’s time at JamFactory showed how her work engages with contemporary Australian design aesthetics, incorporating minimalism, subtle forms and colour. Multiple pieces often come together to form a silhouette that play with the interactions of boundaries within the blown forms.

In 2015, Katie-Ann travelled to the US to complete a mentorship with glass designer and maker, Joe Cariati in Los Angeles where she continued to learn techniques to help develop her production and exhibition work.

Katie-Ann is currently building a sustainable business from a shared studio at JamFactory and has her work stocked in shops around Australia.
